Races Recap: Wins Across Southern New England

Soundrunners took to the streets and trails to finally compete after COVID decimated the race calendar.

 

The Husband and Wife team of William Sanders and Sybil Sanders took first place at the Youth & Family Services of Haddam-Killingworth 5K Pumpkin Run. Finishing Right behind Will in 2nd was Mike Waterbury. Also finishing on the podium for the women was Katie Esposito.

At the Ocean State Half Marathon in Narragansett, RI Stephen Paddock took first place in a time of 1:10:35.

And at the Pachaug Trail Half Marathon Elizabeth Campbell took 7th Overall (and 2nd Female) in a time of 1:59:21.

Fall Racing!

Soundrunners have been back at it this week, hitting the trails, track and road in real races as well as virtual. Normally this weekend would be reserved for the Hartford Half Marathon races, which went virtual. Brendan O’Rourke claimed 15th in the 5k, almost breaking 20:00 after a long comeback from injury.  Chris Vollaro ran a solid 1:23:34 Half to pick up 6th overall.  Sara Bells clocked the full marathon in 3:28 for a top 20 overall finish.

In ‘Real’ racing news: The Mohawk Mountain race saw a handful of impressive performances. In the 5k, Ken Berardi claimed 1st place climbing 1,400 over 3.1 miles to finish in 32:22. For the 8 hour Mohawk Mountain 8 hour VERT Challenge, Will Sanders finished 1st overall, and while relay team duo of Sybil Sanders and Bruce Christensen also claimed the top spot, by scaling almost 20 miles during eight hours and nearly 10,000 ft elevation gain! Mr. John Minervino also posted 21 miles and 10,000+ elevation gain over 5 hours in the VERT Challenge. Ken also came back after winning the 5k to run the VERT Challenge and finished 6th overall, clocking another 25 miles and 12,000 feet! Insane job everyone!

Elsewhere in CT; Katie Esposito and Mike Waterbury had their go at the Woodbridge Fall XC race. Mike finished 4th overall in a speedy 16:14 and Katie 6th female in 19:08.

In the Virtual Trials of Miles Cross Country race – a four- week elimination style national race- after 3 rounds (5K; 8K & 6K) both Liz Campbell and Carolyn Nye are sailing through to Nationals, being 2 of only 5 women from New England to advance. Liz clocked a huge PR of 21:51 for 6k; Carolyn in 21:29. Both will run a 10k time trial at ‘Nationals’ which will be held next week.   

A Return to Racing!

After months of quarantine and isolation, this weekend members of the Soundrunner racing team finally got to hit the (REAL) streets to race against (REAL) people. First up was the Arc run in Meriden on Sat. Sept. 26. Nicholas Migani placed 4th overall in the 5k with a solid time of 16:45, while Anthony Gonsalves finished 2nd overall in the 10k distance with a time of 36:52.

Meanwhile in Hartford, HMF Events hosted the New England’s Finest Throwdown 5k including teams from New York and New England. Entry times were competitive and top athletes included former Olympians, All American’s, High School and College National Champions. Soundrunner fielded two individuals, Stephen Paddock, finishing 26th overall in 15:36 and Carolyn Nye in 20th in 17:54.

Women (Rock and) Roll to Victory In New Haven

New Haven, CT – The Men and Women of SoundRunner began their USATF CT Road Grand Prix Campaign on March 1st. The First Stop was the 99.1 PLR CrossPoint Federal Credit Union ShamRock & Roll 5k in New Haven.

The Women Open Team continued their winning streak from last year by winning the Open and Masters Titles. The Open team was led by Devyn Pryor and Carolyn Nye and easily won the team title by over 5 minutes. The Women’s Master Team of Sybil Shapiro, Amiee Patel, and new comer Debbie Gutfreund easily dispatched the 2nd place team by over four and a half minutes.

The Men’s Open Team were led by overall race winner William Sanders to a Third Place Team Finish. The Men’s Master Team also recorded a Third Place Team finish, while the Grandmaster’s Team finished second.

The next race will be on April 5th, the Harvard Pilgrim Middletown 10 Miler.

Soundrunners Sighted at Club Nationals

Bethlehem, PA- Four Men and Three Men made the Trek down to Lehigh University to compete at the 2019 USATF National Club Cross Country Championships. The harriers ran through thick, ankle high mud and rain to compete against clubs across the nation. The women were led by Devyn Pryor who completed the 6k course in 22:39. The men were led USATF Ct XC Individual Champ Jake Duckworth who ran the muddy 10k in 36:08. The team looks towards the start of the Road Grad Prix Series in March and returning to these championships in 2020 in San Francisco.
